Boosting landholder income

How much extra income can you expect? It depends.

Hosting Batteries

Big battery projects by themselves don't require much land, for sites adjacent to substations they can be as small as a couple of acres.

So their income is not as high as hosting a Solarfarm plus battery project or a Windfarm plus  battery project.

They have a small footprint and have little affect on the property, making them suitable for landholders that want absolute minimum impact on their land, but still want some extra income for a couple of decades.

Hosting Solarfarms or Windfarms

Solarfarms and wind farms are major developments.  They will be in service for at least 25 to 30 years, so they are a source of long term secure income.

Solarfarm hosting properties can be used for grazing sheep on the same land as the solar panels. Cattle and horses are a bit rough on the gear, as are goats, as they climb all over the panels and nibble at the wiring. Flat broad acre general use or low to medium grade grazing land is best. High value cropping land is better off being kept for growing food.

Windfarms hosting properties can be grazed by sheep, cattle or even goats and horses, right up to the tower entrance.  Terrain can be mixed as highest winds is often on the ridges.

Currently windfarms are returning around $30K to $40K per annum per turbine (15 turbines minimum). Prices will vary. Bigger turbines pay more. Returns also vary depending upon wind resources available at the site.

The turbines themselves don't take up much room, as most of their structure is high overhead. An access road and a narrow trench for wiring is also built between the turbines that does take up some ground area. A suitable substation or transmission line must be close. Turbines need to be at least 1.5km away from any house.

Solarfarms pay depending on the land value.

Minimum size that we would look at would be around 650 acres, next to a suitable substation or a transmission line. Maximum up to 4000 acres.

These types of developments will also have some small fenced onsite facilities for service technicians and a fenced switching yard with HV equipment.

The Qld government also pays you if any transmission lines need to be built on or within 1km of your property.
